Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Treatment
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition where blood clots form in the deep veins, typically in the legs. At IYA Medical, our interventional radiologists offer advanced treatments to safely dissolve or remove these dangerous clots.
What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?
DVT occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in the legs. This condition is serious because the clot can break loose and travel to the lungs, causing a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
Symptoms of DVT
About half of people with DVT have no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include:
- Swelling in the affected leg (rarely, both legs)
- Pain or tenderness in the leg, often starting in the calf
- Warmth in the affected area
- Red or discolored skin
- Visible veins on the surface
Warning Signs of Pulmonary Embolism (Seek Emergency Care):
- Sudden shortness of breath
- Chest pain that worsens with deep breathing
- Rapid pulse
- Coughing up blood
- Feeling lightheaded or fainting
Risk Factors
- Prolonged immobility (long flights, bed rest, hospitalization)
- Recent surgery, especially hip or knee replacement
- Injury or trauma to veins
- Cancer and cancer treatment
- Heart failure
- Pregnancy and postpartum period
- Birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Personal or family history of DVT or PE
- Inherited clotting disorders
Advanced DVT Treatments at IYA Medical
Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis
For acute, extensive DVT, our interventional radiologists can deliver clot-dissolving medication directly to the clot through a small catheter. This targeted approach is more effective and safer than systemic treatment.
Mechanical Thrombectomy
Using specialized devices, we can physically break up and remove blood clots. This may be combined with thrombolysis for optimal results.
IVC Filter Placement
For patients who cannot take blood thinners or have recurrent clots despite anticoagulation, we can place a small filter in the inferior vena cava (IVC) to catch clots before they reach the lungs. These filters can often be removed once the risk period has passed.
Venous Stenting
If DVT has caused chronic narrowing or blockage of the veins, stents can be placed to restore normal blood flow and prevent recurrence.
Benefits of Interventional Treatment
- Rapid clot removal reduces risk of pulmonary embolism
- Prevents post-thrombotic syndrome (chronic leg swelling and pain)
- Minimally invasive with faster recovery
- Preserves vein function for long-term health
Prevention
After treatment, our team will work with you to prevent future DVT:
- Compression stockings
- Blood-thinning medications when appropriate
- Lifestyle modifications
- Regular follow-up care
